Chris Fall just quit as director of the Center for AI Standards and Innovation, three months after Commerce named him to the job. A Commerce Department spokesperson confirmed the resignation Monday and wouldn’t say why.
Fall’s predecessor, Collin Burns, lasted four days before the White House pushed him out over his ties to Anthropic. NIST director Arvind Raman is now running CAISI as acting chief on top of his existing job. There’s still no permanent replacement lined up, and Fall’s post was reportedly always meant to be temporary.
Here’s why this matters if you’re building or buying AI: CAISI is the office testing unreleased frontier models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Microsoft and xAI before they ship. Those companies signed on to that review voluntarily, and Trump’s June executive order leans on the same voluntary framework, asking labs for up to 30 days’ pre-release access to “covered frontier models.” A revolving door at the top of that office matters for your compliance team: whoever you call at CAISI this quarter might not be there next quarter.
CAISI’s optics got worse when the White House rolled out its “Gold Eagle” cyber vulnerability clearinghouse: the agency wasn’t named as a participating agency, a signal the office is losing turf even as its mandate expands on paper.
There’s also no AI czar in the West Wing. David Sacks left that post in March, and it’s still empty. If your model launch timeline depends on federal pre-release review, build in slack: the people running that review keep leaving. Two open seats, no fixed dates.
