HHS just staked a claim in a more than $5 billion federal AI push, and NIH already has $1.2 billion of it obligated for FY26 and planned for FY27. If you’re building AI tools for biomedical research or drug discovery, that’s the number to watch, not the press release headline.
The money flows from Executive Order 14363, signed November 24, 2025, which set up the Genesis Mission as a Department of Energy-led effort to accelerate scientific discovery. Fifteen-plus agencies are now buying in. NIH’s slice, the Bio Genesis Mission, wants to cut the time from discovery to patient in half within 10 years, according to Director Jay Bhattacharya.
Here’s the part founders should actually care about: NSF is putting $400 million over four years into 20 “Programmable Cloud Lab” nodes with the Astera Institute, autonomous labs that run experiments without a human pipetting. That’s not a grant program, it’s federal money building infrastructure your lab-automation startup will either plug into or compete against.
Federal AI adoption isn’t theoretical anymore. FDA’s reported AI use cases jumped 148% between FY24 and FY25, NIH’s climbed 51%. If you sell software into these agencies, or you’re a biotech counting on NIH grant cycles, that adoption curve is now your sales forecast.
